Effect of Various Delivatives of Rabbit Blood upon Body Temperature in Normal Rabbits

Abstract
To clarify the pathogenesis of the unexplainable febrile reaction to blood transfusion, the author tested the effect of various delivatives of normal rabbit blood upon the body temperature in normal rabbits. He discussed the results thus obtained and arrived at the following conclusions.
l. The saline solution of the hemoglobin and the serum showed temperature-elevating effect, whereas the saline suspension of the blood cells and the heparinized plasma did not.
2. The serum seemed to contain a certain pyrogenic substance which was labile to heat.
3. On the basis of the above it was suggested that the pyrogenic serum factor might be responsible for the unexplainable febrile reaction to blood transfusion, and it might be helpful to the understanding of abnormal elevation of body temperature in certain pathologic conditions.
